Why Was This Map Created?

The overall importance of breathing to your health is evident when you consider how long you can survive without doing it (just a few minutes). That being said, you may not kill yourself instantly by stopping your breathing all-at-once, but you could be killing yourself slowly through poor breathing habits - with each weak, shallow, polluted breath you take.

This map provides some motivation and simple strategies for helping you to improve how you do this often overlooked, but incredibly important part of being a healthy human being.

How To Use The Various Elements Of The Map

  • Fact - You can't stop the aging process, but you DO have the ability to take control of a measure of your health through proper breathing - perhaps minimizing or even eliminating some health issues.
  • Why? - This list of 17 benefits is meant to drill into your brain the power that proper breathing could have on your health with just a little effort on your part.
  • When/How: Improve your air quality - These are 6 practical strategies for improving the quality of the air you breathe. Over the next several weeks, try implementing 1-2 of them at a time in your own life.
  • When/How: Improve Your Everyday Breathing - You may not realize it, but there IS a proper way to breathe (modern living - sitting, slouching, etc. has resulted in poor breathing habits), and learning to improve the quality of each breath you take can have a huge impact on your overall health.
  • When/How: Occasionally do this simple 4-7-8 breathing exercise - Whenever you have a few moments (you're taking a break from work, you're driving to an appointment, etc.), do this simple breathing exercise.

When/How? 

Improve your air quality 

  • OPEN WINDOWS - At home, work, while driving, while sleeping - as much as possible 
  • GET SOME PLANTS - Ferns, spider plants, aloe vera - they’re living air-purifiers
  • AVOID TOXIC PRODUCTS - Hairsprays, nail polish, cleaners 
  • AVOID SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES - Air fresheners, soaps, detergents, sprays 
  • DON’T IDLE THE CAR - Stop letting your car idle while in the garage 
  • NO SMOKING - Don’t smoke or allow others to smoke inside 

Improve your everyday breathing 

Start breathing more slowly and deeper. Let your belly fill up like a beach ball on the inhale (4 seconds), then let it go on the exhale (6 seconds).

Occasionally do this simple 4-7-8 breathing exercise
  1. BEGIN by completely exhaling through your mouth 
  2. INHALE deeply through your nose for a count of 4 
  3. HOLD your breath for a count of 7 
  4. EXHALE through your mouth for a count of 8 
  5. REPEAT for a total of 4 breaths
